How Weight Lifting Helps with Losing Weight
To lose weight - or fat - you need to increase your metabolic rate. The fact is that muscle has a high metabolic rate. Would it not make sense then to increase your body`s lean muscle tissue to burn fat more quickly and efficiently? By increasing your body`s muscle mass (not necessarily bulk), you are actually increasing your body`s ability to burn calories, and ultimately burn fat.
Why Cardio is Not Necessarily the Answer to Losing Weight
Of course, performing cardiovascular exercise is still a way to lose weight. However, cardio does not increase muscle tissue. You`d have to perform these cardiovascular exercises at increased lengths of time and intensity as your body adjusts to the exercise. Otherwise you will reach a plateau and never get off it.
As you become more aerobically fit, your body will actually burn fewer calories by performing the same exercise at the same intensity for the same amount of time as when you first started. This means that you would have to increase your duration and intensity just to burn the same amount of calories. This is because your heart becomes more efficient, and does not have to work as hard to pump blood.
